Work-life balance seems to be one of the prime concerns that are discussed among friends and colleagues. We, IT folks specifically, seems anxious about work-life balance. When we spent nearly 16-18 hours at times and having to work on weekends due to project delivery pressures makes it worse. We also complain that our work is monotonous if we continue in the same project. We need challenging work, to keep us motivated. But, have we ever thought of work-life balance and motivation for people working in other industries? Rarely, right?
I happened to observe the work schedules of priest’s (poojari/thirumeni/potty) of temples when I started going to a nearby temple regularly. The temple is open from 5 a.m. to 10.30 a.m., and then 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The priest comes as early as 4.45 a.m., to do the preparatory work so that the pooja can start sharp 5 a.m. They server God meticulously; with no complaints whatsoever; this happens 365 days a year; no public holidays, no weekends, no leaves! If they have to take leave, they have to arrange some other priest to do the poojas. The same set of poojas, the same set of mantras; almost every day; except for certain special days when there are special poojas lined up. During utsav days, poojas may extend till 2.30-3.30a.m.; and they have to start the next day’s rituals at 5 a.m. itself. They do the poojas, and we get the blessings…What keeps them motivated to do this job? They don’t even wear a watch, but all the poojas happen on the dot, and I wonder how! 5 a.m. to 10.30 a.m and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m, 365 days a year – what social life do they have? And the dedication with which they perform the poojas every day – no words!
It was an eye-opener for me. The endless worries and doubts we have about life, health, wealth, career or be it anything under the sun… it is just not worth it! It is only when we start observing people around us that we realize how lucky and blessed we are, with what God gifted us, and what we are not given (at times)!
Life is short, and before we realize, it will be over! So stay positive and face life with a smile … and no worries about work-life balance. It is up to us to balance it and find happiness in whatever we do. And believe me, it happens only when we start thinking positive about our achievements and ourselves!
